March 7, 2007 lecture by Phillip Zimmermann for the Stanford University Computer Systems Colloquium (EE 380). Phil talks about how the debate on the use of crypto has shifted since the 1990s, when it was a clash between civil liberties and law enforcement - in the 1990s, the crypto debate was about averting omniscience in governments, but today the encrypted VoIP debate may be about averting omniscience in criminals.

If you wish to learn how to connect your computer on HDTV then here is some help at hand that to understand the procedure.

How To Connect The Computer To The HDTV?

Both the computer and HDTV share common interfaces. This makes matters simple for us as the primary concern has been taken care of. Read on to know the procedure better:

The commonly found interface for computers is DVI and that for HDTV’s is HDMI. If both these interfaces are present on your computer and your HDTV then you are lucky as all you have to do now is to buy a cable that can support your computer’s output resolution to that of your HDTV’s. However, doing this can be a problem because at times cables that can support the same resolutions would not be easily available. So it would be better to pick a HDTV that can accept all standard PC resolutions.

You can also convert your computer on HDTV by using the VGA component, DVI or HDMI that enables HD signals. Try and pick the digital standards as this way you would be able to use an adapter from DVI to HDMI (they both use the same signaling technology).

Once done, plug in the cable from the computer on HDTV after ensuring that they both share the same resolution. If possible, try and use the displays on a native resolution like 1280x768.

You could also look for the desired resolution by using the Powerstrip software. Once installed you would be able to locate the required resolution levels.

If your HDTV still does not accept the resolution then you are left with no other option but to either buy a video card that supports the output component or buy a VGA with a component converter.

As long as the resolutions match, any of the above mentioned methods would enable computer on HDTV

You will soon be able to buy a 3D display that can convert 2D content to 3D on the fly and uses passive polarized glasses to view the stereoscopic images. The display is WideXGA format — 1,366 by 768 pixels – so it can handle 720p high definition without scaling. The whole thing weighs under 6 pounds, but that’s not too surprising when you find out that the screen is only 15.6″ diagonal.

Of course, none of this is so surprising when you find out that it’s the new Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d notebook computer which is due to ship in the next two weeks. The LCD display has alternating polarized strips, so you don’t need active glasses to see the 3D images. The passive glasses mean that you only get half the resolution when viewing 3D content, but this is the price you pay for doing without shutter glasses. A Blu-ray drive is optional, and the computer has an HDMI output in case you want to connect to a full-sized HDTV. The suggested retail price is listed at $1,200 for the base model.

Okay, I just used my entire quota of acronyms in the title, and I haven’t even started the entry. But this is pretty clever news. Gefen has created a “USB DVI Adapter” — oops, more acronyms — that lets you connect a computer to an HDTV. And it only uses a standard USB port. The box is powered by the port, so there’s no need for an external power source. The DVI connector lets you connect to a variety of devices, and DVI-to-HDMI cables are easy to get so you can use this box to connect just about any computer to your HDTV.

Perhaps the coolest feature is that you can connect up to six of these little boxes to one computer. (This assumes that your computer has six USB ports and sufficient processing power, though the Gefen Web site states that the device “uses little resources, ensuring a quality display without compromising performance.”) Sorry, Mac users; you’re limited to just four per machine. It supports resolutions of 1080p and even higher, such as 1920 by 1200. If there’s a drawback, it is that the box costs $149 direct from Gefen, which is a little pricey for a graphics adapter but it makes it up in convenience.

HDTV is the technology of the future. It offers much higher resolution and clarity than analog TV and over twice the resolution of DVD. The FCC has mandated that Digital TV (DTV) replace analog TV. Broadcasters in the USA are well on their way to achieving this objective: Over 50% of TV shows and growing are currently broadcast in HDTV; Over 80% of USA households get five or more DTV channels.

Until now, a special TV costing in excess of $1000 was required to receive HDTV (High Definition Television) signals. Thanks to the HDTV WONDER™, the PC is ready to become the home’s first HDTV device. Now you can enjoy crystal clear HDTV broadcasts on your current PC monitor at a very affordable price.

Use your Computer as a HDTV Receiver

With Media Center PCs and the ability to watch TV on a computer becoming common, more and more people are in search for affordable TV tuners that can receive HDTV. Treat yourself to the fantastic image quality of HDTV on your PC today with the economical HDTV WONDER™ and expand your digital universe. Pinnacle PCTV HD Card brings SD and HD TV with full personal video recorder (PVR) functionality to your PC - with no desktop clutter. Watch, time shift and even automatically record all of your favorite HD and SD TV shows with no service fees.

Pinnacle PCTV HD Solutions Turn PCs into No-fee HDTV. If you bought a PC with a flat screen in the past few years, chances are you have HDTV-quality resolution. Wouldn't it be great if you could get hi-def TV on your computer cheaply while saving up for that big-screen HDTV? Actually, you can.

STEP 1 Turn off your computer and unplug the power cable from the wall. Open the PC and look for an empty PCI slot. Before touching the HDTV card, be sure to discharge static electricity by touching a metal surface. Seat the card into the PCI slot and screw down the retaining bracket. Close the computer. (Don't plug it in just yet.)

STEP 2 Different tuner cards offer different connections, but for HD, you'll want to plug your new antenna into the DTV input on the back of the card. Since cable and satellite providers scramble their broadcast streams, no PC tuner card can fully replace a cable box yet. Most tuner cards also have an analog coaxial input jack for cable.

STEP 3 Attach the other end of the wire to the HDTV indoor antenna. Placement of the antenna is essential for a good signal. Place the antenna as high and as close to a window as possible. For optimum accuracy, check what direction the HD signal is coming from in your area. A good Web site for this is antennaweb.org.

STEP 4 Once everything is hooked up, plug the computer back in, boot up and install the supplied software. (Check your HDTV card manufacturer's Web site for the latest drivers and software updates.) If your card ships with a remote control, be sure to hook up the USB receiver. The DTV software should automatically scan for channels.

HDTV Can Be Taken Outdoor

The above is about watching desk computer at home, so what if you want to take the HDTV ourdoor to a camping activity to add some more fun? And what if there is some big event happening like the soccer game, but you are just not able to watch them at home? You will feel very sorry to miss those exciting moments again. Maybe you can watch them on some entertainment electronics, but the screen is so small, really upset.

But, with new techonology, those problems all can be solved in two ways. One, you can record them down. The software allows you to record TV very easily and with great image quality. Second, you can bring a USB HDTV equiment with short aneter delicated for laptop. This amazing techonogy has already in use. It means you can watch HDTV on you laptop at any time and anywhere. Isn’t that amazing? It’s not something that a computer gadget fan will do. It’s both an economical way and a fashionable way to watch HDTV nowadays, with more function than the traditioanl TV set.

Compare The Image Quality between the TV set and PC

I personaly feel the PC is doing a better job. Now, the most popular PC display size is 22’ in a broad design. It’s really satisfying when wath tv on your computer like this, just like watching DVD 9, or even better. The advertising isn’t that annoying when the image becomes so clear and with gougers color. TV is great too, but I just feel they are a little bigger, and the image quality can’t meet that size standard at this moment. And regarding the resolution part, the traditioanl TV set is certainly lose the battle here. The PC resolution is stronger, bring more clear image for you to enjoy. Or if you are a big size TV fan, it’s not hard to meet your demand, since there is very large Computer monitor now in the market. You can bring them home with a more cheaper price than buying a same size TV set. Besides, the computer monitor can have more jobs to do, not just for watching TV. So one sward, two birds. Why not?

All in one – Simplify your digital life

If you don’t have a very big room, you probobly will find the big TV set unessasary. If not for decoration purpose, the big TV in the hall may be replace by your PC. It’s more practical and ecomomical. All in one, the PC will simplify your digital life. Treat yourself to the fantastic image quality of HDTV on your PC today with the economical HDTV WONDER™ and expand your digital universe.

What is Wireless Broadband?

Wireless broadband is the most new improved broadband service available. This service is a way to receive broadband without the need for wires, instead a broadband wireless signal is sent around a local area using a device called a wireless broadband router, which enables other computers within the area to connect to the broadband internet connection.

What Can I Do With Wireless Broadband?

Well, this improved innovation makes it possible for you to set up a wireless broadband connection at home/work which lets you use the internet on your laptop or another desktop computer, without the need to connect them to your main computer using wires. You could take your laptop in other rooms of your house or office, for that extra bit of peace and quiet or privacy. Once you get this facility, you won’t want to change back, it’s useful and convenient.

The other great use for wireless broadband is where you can access the internet at public places such as cafes, restaurants, airports, train stations etc. The way this works is that a business such as a cafe for example broadcasts a broadband signal in its local area, which you can log onto using your. This method of connecting to broadband in public places is known as Wifi. The places with these facilities are known as Wifi hotspots.

How Do I Get Wireless Broadband Access?

To set up wireless broadband in your home, you will need to have a broadband connection already set up, you will need to buy a wireless broadband router which is the device which sends the wireless broadband signal around your home and you will need to buy a wireless network LAN card for your laptop or second computer which receives your broadband signal. Once you have the network set up, you will also have the added advantage that as your computers are networked together, you will be able to send and receive files from one computer to the other, read files off any of the computer hard drives from any computer in the network and print documents directly from any computer in the network. You will have to leave your main computer on for all of this to be possible though. However you don't need to leave your main computer on to use your broadband wirelessly around your home as the wireless broadband router will still send the broadband signal around your house even when your main computer is switched off.

If you only want to use your laptop in Wifi hotspots when you are out and about then you will only need to buy a wireless LAN card as a broadband router is not required in this case (you will only need a broadband router if you were to use your laptop or computer wirelessly at home). The other thing you will need is an account with a Wifi service provider to give you Wifi access.

Wireless broadband routers and wireless LAN cards can be bought in most offline computer stores or you can buy them online too.

Make the most of your broadband provider and choose the right provider for you.
Browse broadband packages available to you.

Several broadband service providers have several packages available and now include Wifi products, such as wireless kits, wireless minutes, LAN cards etc.

But video involves much more than just pushing bits! Achieving the best possible image quality, accurate color, and smooth motion requires understanding many aspects of image acquisition, coding, processing, and display that are outside the usual realm of computer graphics. At the same time, video system designers are facing new demands to interface with film and computer system that require techniques outside conventional video engineering.

Charles Poynton's 1996 book A Technical Introduction to Digital Video became an industry favorite for its succinct, accurate, and accessible treatment of standard definition television (SDTV). In Digital Video and HDTV, Poynton augments that book with coverage of high definition television (HDTV) and compression systems.

For more information on HDTV Retail markets, go to: http://www.insightmedia.info/newsletters.php#hdtv

With the help of hundreds of high quality technical illustrations, this book presents the following topics:

* Basic concepts of digitization, sampling, quantization, gamma, and filtering
* Principles of color science as applied to image capture and display
* Scanning and coding of SDTV and HDTV
* Video color coding: luma, chroma (4:2:2 component video, 4fSC composite video)
* Analog NTSC and PAL
* Studio systems and interfaces
* Compression technology, including M-JPEG and MPEG-2
* Broadcast standards and consumer video equipment
