Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across over 5,100 cities in India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for broadband Internet access. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the cities in Japan). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E., for broadband Internet access in Japan. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided and concentrated across the cities and regional markets of Japan. For each prefecture, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time. In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

In an article last week, Media Daily News cited Time Warner Cable CFO John Martin’s statement that he expects half of all pay-TV homes in the U.S. will have the option of a TV Everywhere service to go along with their subscription. Cable and satellite companies are moving rapidly to give their customers “any time, any where” access to their programming content over the Internet. Martin also said he would not be surprised if the number of homes reached 50 million by this time next year.

TV Everywhere is an important movement in the subscription-based TV programming market. While consumers can access some TV content for free on the Internet — such as through Hulu or the individual network sites — they also want to be able to watch the premium channels and live programming that they have paid for as part of their subscriptions. The services are responding in hopes of being able to retain their customers and attract new ones.

I think that this is a great idea in general, but I’m concerned that it may backfire on the subscription services. If the TV Everywhere offerings are primarily the dozens of channels that people don’t watch that much anyway, or if there is an additional premimum charged to watch the “good” ones, I believe that it will put added pressure on the subscription services to offer “a la carte” pricing. With monthly bills of $100 to $200 being common, consumers would love to pick and choose which networks they want and not pay for the rest. But this would be the death knell for cable and satellite as we know it; I doubt that most could survive the loss of revenue for the “other” channels that don’t have much of an audience but round up the total channel count (and HD content count) for these companies. And then there’s the question of whether people will need the basic service at all; if given the choice of just getting their all content over the Internet, will they take down their dishes and cut off the coax?

Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across over 5,100 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for HDTV. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of "economic population", as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this "economic" definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city's marketing and distribution value vis-a-vis others. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for broadband Internet access. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

Activists argue that the U.S. government must match the aggressive high-tech programs being tried abroad.
The study concludes that the HDTV case--the activists' model for promoting technological competitiveness--ironically confirms the misgivings of skeptics and demonstrates the flaws in industrial policy. HDTV activists have exaggerated the strategic national importance of the industry, overstated the threats from the HDTV programs abroad, and miscalculated the pace and shape of technological advance in electronics. They have distracted attention from policy issues more important to the development and diffusion of advanced technologies.

A recent survey of 500 U.S. companies with multiple locations found that 81% are planning to implement IP Telephony on their local area networks (LANs) in 2003, and two-thirds are looking at convergence for their wide area networks (WANs) as well. This includes voice, video and data over hard line and wireless networks.
Today, new standards and technologies are being developed to support convergence and voice over IP (VoIP) and Video over IP and wireless. Because convergence covers the voice and data world, it will be critical to understand all of these environments.

This book provides detailed information on convergence network models, protocol stacks, routing algorithms, gateways and switches required to support these networks.

This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for HDTV.

Do you still believe that there’s a big future in moving little polycarbonate discs around the country? Here’s another data point to the contrary; Hollywood Video is throwing in the towel and closing all of its 2,415 U.S. stores. The parent company, Movie Gallery, filed for bankruptcy in February and had planned to close more than half of its stores. It now has changed directions and is going to liquidate the business.

Hollywood Video is the second largest U.S. chain of movie rental stores, behind Blockbuster which is having its own troubles. Between the Redbox kiosks, the Netflix mail rental service, cable on-demand offerings, and the rapid growth of online streaming sources, there’s just not much room left for a local storefront video rental business. And now it looks as though some more prime commercial real estate will be coming on the market soon.
