Skype's mobile app uses Verizon's 3G data network when used on an Android phone...right? Wrong. In this video, we conduct a series of tests and arrive at the conclusion that Skype Mobile on Verizon Android phones actually makes calls over Verizon's voice network.

Does this “voice only” Skype app do the same tricks on non-Verizon Android phones?
@kwakman99 i was being sarcastic…obviosly we use VOIP to limit our data transmision. but these weasels just want to suck every dollar out of us that they can.. i have vonage at home actually, love it.
@rcbg432 Well said, I couldn’t agree more.
@miasmablk I though it was self explanatory. Simple…..to make you give Verizon and Skype more money. It’s not a true VOIP app, no data transmission not VOIP.
@gianuy007 Corporate greed my friend. Money is a great motivator to take advantage of the ignorant. I’m surprise anyone is surprised by anything these f*!kin companies do to scr@w the users out of more money.

@soloasis and how does one but an iphone? noob.
just buy iphone.. nubs.*
just but iphone.. nubs.
Same problem with Google voice
This is really bad that Verizon did this and Skype bended over.
laaaame…..what’s the point in having a VOIP app then?
Make free outgoing/incoming calls on any android device, without using Gizmo 5/Sipsorcery/Evan Charlton’s GV app.
Gizmo5 subscriptions are closed, Sipsorcery is not giving new accounts, Here is the FIX. No Gizmo5, No Sipsorcery.

clear helpful info, thanks
Isn’t there a conflict of interests with them giving you full skype access on their cell phones?
What about the n900
Thanks for exposing what is a profoundly disingenuous way to use the brand name “Skype” which we, the users, have come to understand as meaning one thing but which telephone carriers are in the process of morphing into something quite different. It is a form of soft fraud to call it by the same name and we the consumers ought to punish the carriers that engage in it by selecting other options.

Nice Video thanks,
Verizon from their site:
“Put the planet in your pocket. Introducing unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls and IM with anyone anywhere in the world. Skype mobile&tm; now available on America’s Most Reliable Wireless Network – Verizon. Plus with Skype mobile you get low rates to international landlines and cell phones.”
If VZ really uses voice network for Skype on Android phones, somebody’s gonna have a lil’ surprise when the bill comes after an international skype conversation.
Do a search for ” Skype Mobile for Android and blackberry reviews ” for a video stating it.
Verizon isn’t hiding anything though. They announced that skype will be using the voice network and not the data network when it makes calls. I assume that is why it wont work under wifi.
My Windows Mobile Phone uses Skype with Wifi and/or cellular data, sprint
Duh
